FARGO - Minnesota ranked third and North Dakota fourth in WalletHub's 2018 Happiest States in America report.

To determine where Americans are happiest, WalletHub compared the 50 states across 31 indicators. The data set includes emotional health, job satisfaction, income growth and safety.

The top 10 happiest states are

• Hawaii

• Utah

• Minnesota

• North Dakota

• California

• Idaho

• Maryland

• Iowa

• South Dakota

• Nebraska

The five least happy states are West Virginia, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alaska and Oklahoma.

North Dakota ranked first for lowest long-term unemployment rate and highest income growth. Minnesota came in as third safest, had the third-highest volunteer rate and fifth-highest sports participation rate. Both were in the top five for lowest divorce rate. For the full report, visit
